Papers of the Tanzanian Theological Ecumenical Colloquium[nbsp]
The volume "Society and Church in an African Context" is the outcome of a conference of the Tanzanian Theological Ecumenical Colloquium. The nine articles from younger theologians working in different fields in Tanzania, from various denominational backgrounds, tackle the role of the Christian churches in the Tanzanian society from diverse perspectives. While a few of them are dealing with the historical role of the Church during Ujamaa, the majority of them embark upon a discussion of ecclesial challenges with which the churches currently grapple, e.g. questions of develop-ment, transformation processes, HIV/AIDS and the youth.

In sum we can state that churches in Africa have to be involved in societal issues and have to influence the society from their Christian perspective. They are of enormous importance if we look at their role for the future of this continent.

This book is the fruit of a team's work, a joint venture between scholars and pastors from South and North. The members of the project group have been two Tanzanian scholars, Rev Emeline Ndossi and Dr Lechion Peter Kimilike from Makumira University College and two Norwegian scholars, Dr Leif Gunnar Engedal, MF Norwegian School of Theology and Rev Dr Oyvind M. Eide, The School of Mission and Theo-logy.

This book is about the Christian ministry of pastoral care and counselling. The aim of the book is to give support to anyone involved in the ministry of restoring what is broken in Christian communities in Africa. If this healing is to take place, faith and message must be conscious of the questions, values, fears and aspirations which dominate the life and thought of women and men there. We have opted for the concept of[nbsp]hospitality. This concept relates to a basic characteristic in African anthropology and to one of the most crucial characteristics of Christian spiritual life.

The role of Chagga migrants within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania
The Chagga people of the Kilimanjaro area in Northern Tanzania migrate to nearly all parts of the country as businesspeople, civil servants, administrators of the government and teachers. A large number of them are members of the Lutheran Church. At their working places they continue to practise their Lutheran faith as well as founding new Lutheran congregations or strengthening the existing Lutheran communities. This study evaluates the contribution of these Chagga migrants to the growth of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania.

The study reveals the contextual theological, social, and cultural dynamics of conflicts within these families and shows that there is a need for an pastoral care and counselling approach that includes work on systemic causes of conflict in the family and that empowers people for transformation.

Destructive and violent conflicts in Tanzanian Christian families motivated to do this research. As part of a conceptual study of conflict and Conflict Transformation the author conducted interviews with lay and clergy leaders of the ELCT and supplemented these data with statistical material collected from a few selected congregations. The study reveals the contextual theological, social, and cultural dynamics of conflicts within these families and shows that there is a need for an pastoral care and counselling approach that includes work on systemic causes of conflict in the family and that empowers people for transformation.

Preventing future marital problems in families

The practice of human sacrifice among the Maasai is against human rights. Killing of a member of their community is against the social laws of the Maasai’ however during the Eunoto ceremony a member of the age-set which celebrates the ceremony must die as a sacrifice for his age-set. The study investigates the origin of human sacrifice among the Irkisongo Maasai of Northern Tanzania, Its purpose and outcomes.
The research found that the human sacrifice is introduced by Iloibonok (ritual expert, prophet, witch, medicine man) for his own benefits, however the society believes that the sacrifice is for prosperity of the age-set members. The sacrifice causes trauma, psychological, social problems and dearth to the scapegoat as well also the member of his family.
Rev Dr. Suzana Sitayo was born in Arusha Tanzania. Theological studies at Tumaini Makumira University (2004-2009) Bachelor of Divinity, (2009-2011) Master of Missiology, (2013-2018) PhD in Religious studies at Fredrick Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. She is Pastor in the ELCT –Northern Central Diocese.

Diese Studie untersucht das Konzept der Behinderung in der Chagga-Gemeinschaft, die an den Hängen des Kilimanjaro im Norden Tansanias lebt. Die Arbeit erforscht die Initiationszeremonien und andere Praktiken der Chagga, die Menschen mit Behinderungen verletzen, erniedrigen und ausgrenzen. 

Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass diese Praktiken ein unmenschliches Verhalten gegenüber Menschen mit Behinderungen erzwingen.
 

Die vorliegende Studie bietet Vorschläge für die Chagga-Gemeinschaft, um ihr Menschenbild zu erneuern und ihre exklusive Gemeinschaft in eine integrative zu verwandeln. Die Menschen in der Chagga-Gemeinschaft müssen begreifen, dass alle Menschen gleich sind und dass jedes Individuum wertvoll und einzigartig ist. Kirchen, Moscheen, Regierungen und Nichtregierungsorganisationen in Tansania sollten als Werkzeuge der Befreiung fungieren.

This study investigates and analyses the concept of disability among the Chagga community, a group that lives near the slopes of Kilimanjaro Mountain in the northern part of Tanzania. This work examines the beliefs, rituals, initiation ceremonies and other practices by the Chagga people that involve harming, degrading and excluding people with disabilities. According to the findings, these practices enforce inhuman behaviour towards people with disabilities.

This present study offers suggestions for the Chagga community to renew their understanding of human beings and transform their exclusive com- munity to an inclusive one. People in the Chagga community must understand that people are equal and that every individual is worthy and unique. Churches, mosques, government, and non-governmental organisations should act as tools for liberation.

Um die Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert nahm die Berliner Missionsgesellschaft (BMS) ihre Tätigkeit in der Gegend von Morogoro in Tansania auf. Weitnauer untersucht, wie die ersten Missionarinnen und Missionare auf den Missionsstationen lebten und ihr "Zeugnis und Bemühen", (Witness and Effort) verstanden.

In Tanganjika wurden die Missionarinnen und Missionare mit der deutschen Kolonialmacht konfrontiert. Oft hatten sie Schwierigkeiten, ihre unterschiedlichen Rollen in der Seelsorge, als Gastgeberinnen und oft auch Landbesitzer sachgerecht einzuordnen und es entstand daraus, nicht nur bei ihnen selbst, Verwirrung über ihre Rolle. Viele von ihnen ignorierten ihre Verstrickung mit der Kolonialmacht. Nur wenige widersetzten sich.

Die Kirche vor Ort aber wuchs vor allem durch die zunehmende Aktivität der einheimischen Christinnen und Christen, besonders nach 1945. Die Missionare mussten die Verantwortung abgeben und der einheimischen Bevölkerung zugestehen, selbständig voranzugehen und ihr eigenes "Zeugnis und Bemühen" zu entwickeln.

Around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Berlin Mission Society (BMS) started activities in the Morogoro area. Weitnauer’s work explores how the first missionaries lived on the mission stations and understood their “witness and effort”, their different roles as pastors, landlords and often also landowners.

In Tanganyika, the missionaries were confronted with the German colonial power which brought them into confusion about their role. Many missionaries ignored their entanglement with the colonial powers. Only a few resisted.

And yet the local church grew mainly through the increasing activity of local Christians, especially after 1945. The missionaries had to give up responsibility and to allow the local population to go ahead inde- pendently and to develop their own “witness and effort”.
